Macro cell market should stay healthy
A forecast by Mobile Experts predicts a shifting market for mobile communications base stations, with new
technologies driving growth in the number of radio transceivers deployed annually. The forecast predicts that
over 14 million transceivers will be installed during 2016, more than half for LTE services. The report says
that despite the rise of small cells, the macro cell market will remain strong in part because LTE systems
require more transceivers per base station.
First LTE-Advanced baseband IC
Cognovo has unveiled the world’s first baseband device that can support operation of the new LTE-Advanced
standard, allowing licensees to develop soft modems for the first time. LTE-Advanced will support data rates
above 1 Gb/s.
New uses for microwaves: Drying coal
China’s CoalTek has
won government approval to build an industrial-scale facility deploying its proprietary microwave-coal
technology in Inner Mongolia. The project will cost more than $350 million and process 10 million metric tons
a year. Radiating coal with microwave energy dries it, which makes coal burn easier and raises the efficiency
of producing electricity with it. CoalTek has operated a coal-microwaving facility in Kentucky since 2007.
Sony Ericcson Now Just Sony
Starting next month, Sony Ericcson smartphones built by Ericcson
based on Google’s Android operating system will only sport the Sony brand. Sony acquired Ericsson's 50% stake
in their 10-year-old joint venture. The feature phone portfolio will be killed off. |
A Message from Sam Benzacar
Wi-Fi Not Fast Enough? Just Wait….
Most people are probably happy with their IEEE 802.11n Wi-Fi systems, as the data rate is probably greater
than the cable or fiber broadband system it’s connected to. However, there’s even faster Wi-Fi in the wings.
The IEEE 802.11ac standard will bring data rates to about 1 Gb/s, operates at 5 GHz with bandwidths up to 160
MHz, eight MIMO streams, and multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) that provides different data streams to multiple
devices. The standard should be complete late next year. Then there’s IEEE 802.11ad, popularly called
“Microwave Wi-Fi”, although it’s somewhat misnamed as it operates at 60 GHz. It is supposed to deliver data
rates up to 6 Gb/s (!), and its target is very-high-speed data transfer with a potential range of only about
20 ft. – assuming nobody is standing in the way. Then there is IEEE 802.11af, which is being called
“White-Fi” since it uses the “white spaces” between television channels that became available after the
transition in 2009 by TV broadcasters from analog to digital transmission left unused spectrum available for
unlicensed use. Services using the spectrum could enable new wireless broadband internet options in areas
where it is not available. Devices are required to query a TV-bands database to obtain a list of channels that
are available for their operation and automatically avoid them to protect licensed services. The FCC requires
that each database be tested for 45 days to ensure accuracy. The first such trial ended on November 2 and
another began on December 7. To make things just a little more confusing, there’s IEEE 802.22, a
ratified (non-Wi-Fi-related) standard that also uses the TV white spaces to bring broadband access to
hard-to-reach, low-population-density areas. It’s the first such standard to define a standardized air
interface based on cognitive radio technology. Like every Wi-Fi system, and perhaps more so
considering the congested spectrum they operate in, IEE802.22 and IEEE802.11af will require high-performance
filters with high-rejection – a specialty at Anatech Electronics for 21 years. Look right to check out some of
