Induction generation micro hydropower system - Help! - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Hello Brains Everywhere!

I hope this is the right forum...if not perhaps someone will inform me (not too harshly, I am such a newbie)

I am working on an induction generation microhydro system and the calculations for determining capacitance are eluding me.

I am using an AC 3 phase motor:
Horsepower: 1 1/2
Voltage: 230/460
Hertz: 60
Phase: 3
Full Load Amps: 5/2.5
Usable at 208 Volts: N/A
RPM: 1140

I can eek 10 amps (DC) out of it running at 1200 rpm with 40uf in delta off of the delta connected 230 v input. (after transformer and recitifier magic to produce DC)

Of course I want more amps! But my formula's elude me. I know there is one to determine most efficient capacitance. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi Kittyprincess
You have landed on a planet where 40 microamps is heavy current 8-)
We mainly dabble with radio, RF, weak electromagnetic fields etc.
However, we probably have a number of electrical engineers present who might help.
I am not sure where the capacitor figures in this unless
a) it is to do with 3 phase to single phase conversion or
b) the rectifier filter capacitor.
