Alarm monitoring - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

I would like to get information on whether it is possible to connect a home alarm system to be monitored through the use of ham radio signals [not cellular] and, if so, information on how to get started [products, info, etc].

Anyone have any experience with it? Is it worth the effort?

I am interested in using it as backup in case of a major emergency [no POTS, internet, cellular, et al].

it's possible, but if you are not a licensed radio ham you will need to use CB, which is pretty rugged against system failure. On the other hand, in the final disaster scenario (eg Katrina), such legal niceties may be over-looked.
What range do you need to cover?
Do you just need on/off alarm contact data or is there video involved?
