Looking for experienced RF applications engineers - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

I did not have in mind when establishing this manager-engineer employment forum that I would be the first to use it. However, an opportunity (or two) has arisen where I work as an applications engineer at a major RFIC design company in the Winston-Salem/Greensboro area of North Carolina.

In the Worldwide Customer Applications department where I work, we are looking for an engineer capable of interfacing with our customers’ design engineering groups in support of our line of GSM, W-CDMA, Bluetooth, WLAN and GPS products. These include power amplifiers, front-end modules, mixers, modulators, and complete system-level radio/phone chipsets. Experience has shown that the people best matched for this job are ones with PCB-level circuit design experience that have successfully dealt directly with customers to assist in designing discrete components into a higher level system architecture. Previous exposure to the commercial wireless realm is considered a plus, but generally any experience in designing and testing amplifier matching and biasing circuits, integration of board-level isolators, diplexers, antenna switches, filters, etc., is acceptable.

Our Apps Engineers work closely with the IC design groups within the company from prototyping through initial production runs, introduction to the marketplace, and support of current and legacy product integration. Our company has never skimped on equipping the labs with top-notch test equipment, and the all-too-frequent problem of having someone steal your equipment over the weekend is almost never heard of (there’s always a rogue that has to learn). The work environment is intense, but without exception the most congenial one in which I have ever had the pleasure of working.

Since our customers are literally worldwide, it will be necessary to be able to communicate via phone and e-mail with folks who’s first language is not necessarily English. Bilingual or multilingual skills would be nice, but generally customers speak English well enough to be effective. If not, then our Apps Engineers stationed at locations throughout the world can do the heavy lifting. Most of our Apps Engineers end up traveling for a week or two, three to four times a year in a whirlwind tour of all the customer areas for which they have responsibility. Typical areas are the Americas, China/Far East, Near East, Europe. Like I mentioned already, we have sales/support offices in all those areas staffed with nationals, but they still need assistance from the home base because we are the closest to the designers. Those guys (and gals) seem to work around the clock – it’s amazing what hard workers they are.

Aside from the need for hardware engineers, we can also use a good software person to support some of the Bluetooth and WLAN products, and maybe to help with some of the calibration routines for the phone PAs.

There is no set minimum number of years required, but your experience should be such that it justifies claims of expertise. We have a number of new grads, but now we need more experienced folks both to carry some of the heavier load and to mentor the younger guys.
