substrate terminal for passive devices - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

In CMOS designs is there any need to connect the substrate terminal of passive devices to ground?

It is probably best to make some sort of connection to ground. If the device is setting in a WELL (such as a PMOS) the "substrate" (not really a sub tie but an NWELL tie) is used to place the WELL to a high voltage otherwise the device will not work properly.
