mixer selection - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Hello newcome,

Mixer is not being chosen only according to the freuquency range that in can convert, but according to additional other parameters as: LO power level, IP3, P1dB, Return Loss... You should define these parameters in order that one can help you choose the suitable device.

Thank your reply. I look for SMT package mixer from RFIC companies such as mini-circuits, not mixer module. It looks not easy to find this kind of mixer which can cover the needed frequency band. Of course, IP3 high is better. Could you recommend any SMT type?( module type too enpensive)

I was looking for the type of mixer you need, it is indeed a bit non-trivial to find such mixer. Anyway, I found couple of models from Hittite:

Of course it depends on you performance requirments, but you can drive the IF port with a 1.7GHz @ say 10dBm. Put 5.8GHz into the LO and take the IF from the "RF" port. The harmonic of 1.7GHz will mix with 5.8GHz.

For example the MCA1-60 from Minicircuits may work. Probably a few from Hittitie too.

You can swap the LO and RF, there will be a trade between IIP3 and Conversion Loss.

Thank IR and RK, HMC129 is chip type, not convenient, HMC219MS8
LO data availabe only down 4GHz, how about 3.3GHz operating?

For harmonic mixing, it is novel idea, but it only with harmonic type (anti-parallel diode) may work well.

MCA1-60 is my first choice, IF data only 2.0GHz, but may extend to 2.5GHz . Do you have better choice? Thanks again. Happy New Year

I think your recommended HMC219 may work. It doesn't offer IL below 4GH and IL down quickly from 5GHz to 4Ghz, but for LO VSWR data, it may work.

At the frequencies you've mentioned, I've personally had the most luck with Hititte mixers. Especially the cost versus performance factor.

If you have specific requirements, you may consider calling the Hittite Appplications Group. They many times have data that is not shown in the data sheet and Hittite ususally come out with 75-100 new parts a year, so there may be Mixer that will better fit your requirements. I use Hittite parts whenever I can just because of the great support I get from them.
