Modifying A Baby Monitor - More Wattage - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

I'm a licensed ham and I need some diagrams or instructions on how to mod a 49 MHz baby monitor to put out more power. It's currently at 100 mW. I'm looking to boost that up to at least 500 mW.

I hit the send button too soon.

I've got a replacement crystal that'll go in as soon as I mod it so that it transmits in the 50 MHz band.

I'd appreciate any input on this.

In my experience, baby monitors come in two varieties:
1. Discrete designs (perhaps with some IC's)
2. Single-chip designs

In the first case, you might be able to modify the PA stage for more power. In the second, you probably can't do anything. That's how the FCC wants things - hard to make mods that make them illegal for the intended use.

You might check to see what you've got, and let us know.

Good Luck!

I don't get what you're saying. "It's hard to make mods that make them illegal for their intended use." What does that mean? If it's operating under part 97 rules in ham bands then it's legal. I can modify and homebrew anything I want as long as I follow the rules for part 97. Now, as far as the actuall device. This thing's got a a simple PCB board. There's no IC.
