I have a question about buying small amounts of RF varactors with a
few pF ranges.
Actually I found that many manufacture websites
such as Areoflex, MDT, infoneon, etc.
Should I directly contact
the manufactors or the sales distributors? Do they like to provide small
amounts of the varactor to students?
I am really not quite familiar
with the buying procedure, and will appreciate any information about
it.

can be tough. There is no doubt. Generally, the suppliers want to sell
to cellular phone companies, not students or small OEMs.
Usually,
though, you can get them through distribution. Stick with Digikey and
Mouser as they will sell small quantities. The big disties like Future
will not usually break a reel for you, and yo don't want 3000.
Digikey sells Toshiba varactors (page 1090 of their latest catalog).
Mouser sells Zetex varactors (page 379). The Zetex diodes are hyperabrupt,
so they are good where large tunign ranges are needed.
The other
option is to try and get the manufacturer to sample some parts to you.
This is a hit or miss proposition. If it were me, I would try to find
a way to make the Toshiba or Zetex parts work and order them from one
of the catalog companies.
