The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Hi all :

I'd like to seek your advice regarding fundamental EM simulation, for 4-6GHz frequency range. It is my first time doing EM simulation. I'm using SonnetLite software tools.

I'm not sure about the fundamental of this EM simulation, like what is the main purpose. I learnt about EM before, about far-field, Common mode, differential mode radiation. But I'm not sure how to relate to simulation purposes.

Could any kind souls out there enlighten me?

Thanks so much.
I'll appreciate if anyone can share simple notes to explain this EM simulation fundamental.

Warm Regards,
Jean

Hello Jean,

EM simulations is used in order to simulate physical phenomenon related to high-frequencies: Skin effect, reflections from enclosures, coupling between transmission lines. In EM simulations you take into consideration both physical and electrical properties of distributed elements and get an overall picture of the performance besides the linear simulation and gives the designer an insight about the performance of the circuit in real environment - like inside an enclosure or shielded cans. It is also being used to find problems in high-frequency PCB layout: radiation from vias, interferences etc, it is used to simulate Antenna performances...

There is plenty of material available in the Internet over EM simulations.

Good luck!!
