AWR2004 - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Hello GYS,

There is no best tool for Microwave circuit design. Few tools (And AWR - Microwave Office is one of them) give you a comprehensive solution in one package for complete system design. When you want to choose an EDA tool that suits your needs there are several factors you should consider and one of them is cost - there is a big difference in the cost between these tools. Other factors are the various uses/applications you require. If you only need to do circuit simulations you can tailor the package of tools required (HB, linear, layout) out of the complete suite and by that save a lot of money.

I like to evaluate the software from a cost versus performance ratio. Agilents ADS has alot of performance since it has a long history in the market and from this history has been able to build onto its product. However, the cost is quite high. AWR is less expensive and is has a comprable performance to ADS. Genesys is has the lowest cost out of the 2 and its performance is quite. I have used all three packages and find that Genesys performance is quite good and the lower price puts it in reach for persons/facilities on a low buget. You can purchase 3 licenses of Genesys for the price of 1 license of ADS and 2 licenses of AWR.

Hi:

For my personal point of view, Microwave Office (AWR) is more close to Windows application, while ADS more on hierarchy based.
Like IR said, that there is no best EDA tools in RF design, it is more on the users preference and needs, such as models available, optimization approach and so on.
