Good Antenna Primer? - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Below are the old forum threads, including responses to the original posts.

I'm familiar with the basic mechanical and performance characteristics which distinguish yagis, backfires, dishes, and panels from one another. Yet, I still am unable to understand their strengths/weaknesses when compared on an otherwise equal basis. Let's say, 2.4GHz units at about 15dbi and 30 to 40 degree beamwidth.

I've been looking for a really good "antenna applications for idiots" primer
online without luck. Most of the quick reference pages are offered by retailers and only very generally describe the strengths of each, minus any meaningful comparison between them.
Any links you might proffer?
