2.4GHz PCB Antenna - Thumb Rules, Design App Notes and ++ - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Hi All,

I am looking for a good reference book, any application notes or web links on how to design a omnidirectional 2.4GHz PCB antenna.

I need to design a single board solution that includes the antenna + all the other parts (RF chipset, crystal, passive parts etc...).

I am looking for realistic examples, I don't have time to loose with complicated math theory or "never ending explanations". :)

I learned these theories back in the 90's when I was a university student but I forgot all that stuff, I have been involved only in digital designs since that time :)

I am looking for an "Antenna CookBook", for something that can be put in production, fast.

Thanking you in advance,

MC

Hi MC
I came across this PCB no-frills design for 4.5GHz, but all dimensions are given as wavelength fractions, so it could easily be scaled to 2.45G or anyplace else in the spectrum.
It is not fully omni directional, being a double stack panel, but a 2 way splitter/combiner with 2 of these back to back should work.

The reference is (UK) IEE Proc. Microwaves, Antennas & Propagation Vol. 146 No 4 Aug 1999.

It comprises 2 parasitic rectangular patches supported on low k foam, proximity coupled to a 50 microstrip line that has a step rise beneath the lower rectangle. The gain is about 7dBi, the FBR around 20dB, the cross-polar boresight level is around 25dB, but the most spectacular parameter for a patch antenna is the VSWR bandwidth: 58% for a VSWR of 2:1 or better. Beat that 8-)
