My Working Experience - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Hello everyone,

Well I live outside US and maybe there is another working mentality in where I come from. But what really pisses me off are 2 issues:

- When people say that an Engineer is better than a Technician - they simply don't understand that these 2 roles are different and there is no conflict between them.In this case, there is no better than or worse than. Also when people says that it is not "worth" being a Technician. Well, an R&D Technician has a broader view over products' lifecycle, simply because before moving to R&D he/she were involved in testing of products and can implement the knowledge they gained from this experience in designing of better products. Where Engineers, who often start immediately in doing design tasks lack fundamental knowledge in DFM and DFT aspects, reliability, design to cost etc.

- When people keep information for themselves and son't share. This simply shows about being narrow-minded. By that they believe that other members in the team won't overgrow them and their position is secured. What they don't realize is that they cause their colleagues to resent them. These people believe that they will take their "secrets" with them down to the grave; However, It is well known that "The last shirt one will wear has no pockets".

Please share your thoughts and experiences...

Greetings:

Well put.

The same thing occurs in the U.S., I'm afraid. However, the ranting comes from both sides. Way back in my technician days, it was quite common to listen to a spirited discussion between technicians about how much smarter they were than the engineers. This was especially prevalent in the test area, when if a resistor or capacitor had to be changed, the tech that discovered the error would go on a rant. Of course, highbrow engineers would also regularly try to blame the technicians for everything that did not pass test. Overzealousness toward one’s own greatness is a potential pitfall for everyone.
